Bulgarian4English & English4Bulgarian speakers

.... how do you explain the use or not of the definite or indefinite articles in English to a Bulgarian trying to learn it:

I was at court/hospital/school/college/home (no article)

This doesn't work for

I was at restaurant/museum/garage/shop/concert (needs an article)

Is there any logic or rule here?

The good people of Yorkshire solved this problem long ago. Just put a t' in front of any word that seems problematical. Skilled users done actually sound a recognisable "t" but do a gentle Pennine glottelstop. Tell all Bulgarians to go and live in Yorkshire where they will get on fine with this ammunition under their belts.

Very true - it would solve/avoid the problem for speech, but not for the written word.
